The fish processing industry’s EBT as a percentage of turnover was at 0.9% in 2017, up from -1.3% in 2016. The numbers for 2016 were however strongly influenced by large losses in the company Salmar AS, and excluding this company from the analysis increases the 2016-result to 0.7%. The fish processing industry had good help from a weak Norwegian krone in 2017, but though competition in the first-hand market pushed the margins down. This could be seen in both the whitefish, pelagic and salmon industry.
Employment in the fish processing industry increased by 2% from 2016 to 2017. In 2017, 370 companies produced seafood for consumption in Norway. This is 15 companies less than two years ago, and 115 less than ten years ago.
CPI-adjusted value-added in the wild-caught based segment increased by 3% from 2016 to 2017.
