Research on shrimp shells carried out by Nofima more than 10 years ago can now be a commercial success. The Marealis company carried out a large-scale trial production at Nofima’s pilot factory Biotep, with very promising effects. The blood pressure lowering supplement will soon be launched in Canada.
The overall goal for this project is twofold; the establishment of biovalorization processes to convert unutilized marine raw rest materials into valuable bioproducts on a pilot scale.
We have the expertise and equipment needed to develop and formulate ingredients based on biological materials, and to adapt such material for use in foods, feed and technical areas.
There’s an enormous potential to use rest raw material from food production more efficiently. Our scientists are working to develop technology and methods to increase the value and use of rest raw material.

Snow crabs have taken over the Barents Sea and both Norwegian and Russian vessels are fishing and landing the catch in Norway. Nofima is currently researching the best ways of using these crabs.
Nofima’s research is focused on increasing the value of marine raw materials. Our scientists have extensive experience within the field of bioprospecting, bioprosessing and scale up of processes in order to exploit and preserve value in raw materials from the ocean.
In our flexible mini-factory high technology companies can test and optimize their processes to extract all desired components from marine- and plant-based biomass.
