Cleaner fish are kept together with the salmon in the cages, and eat lice off the salmon. This is an important weapon in the struggle against sea lice. But lice are more like ‘snacks’ for the fish, and alone, do not contribute enough nutrition to support them. In a new project, scientists will acquire knowledge of the correct feed and the nutrition needed.

Scientists at Nofima have started to breed lumpsucker (lumpfish) families which have a special liking for consuming salmon lice. Eating salmon lice seems to be a genetic trait.

Lumpfish have become an important weapon in the struggle against sea lice. This means that there are large volumes of it in Norwegian aquaculture. Now the task is to find new ways of using the little working fish.

Costs in the salmon aquaculture industry have risen considerably in recent years: production costs per kilogram increased by NOK 5 between 2012 and 2014.
The production biology department works with major challenges in the aquaculture industry, including salmon lice, escapes, animal welfare, sustainability and production optimisation.
