Action or negotiation? The first-hand sale of frozen whitefish

This report presents the results of an analysis of the first-hand sale of onboard frozen cod, haddock and saithe by the Norwegian Fishermen´s Sales Organisation (Norges Råfisklag) for 2009–2017. The results show that the sale through auction is in decline compared to contracts (negotiation). In 2017, only 32% of the cod was sold through auction. Despite this, the average price for cod at the auction was 2.56% higher than the price for cod sold on contract, holding other factors such as fish size, fishing method and season constant. The report concludes with suggestions for how to increase sales through the auction.
