The experiments show that adult male snow crab at commercial size can be kept without feeding for at least 2 months in temperatures from 1 °C to 5 °C. The experiments show that during starvation the crabs get the energy reserves from the hepatopankreas. The crab has a low metabolism and activity that requires low energy needs. Furthermore, our trap experiment shows that only crabs smaller than 300 g have possibility to escape from the trap. Knowledge generated in these experiments is important for the live holding of snow crab in order to ensure the highest possible survival, quality and the best possible animal welfare during capture, transport and live holding. For the first time, we have demonstrated that also snow crab from the Barents Sea has infections of Hematodinium sp.
