Atlantic cod exposed to abrupt fall in temperature (8-16ºC to 1 or 3ºC) had limited acute stressrelated responses when transferred to 3ºC, but indications of severe stress appeared in fish transferred to 1ºC. The stressrelated responses escalated with increasing initial temperature, with reduced body water content and increased plasma chloride and osmilality at 12ºC or higher. Fish in these groups also had acute homeostasis problems and >50% of the fish was immobilised within 5 minutes after transfer. On longer term, all groups except the one transferred from 8 to 3ºC showed temporal reductions in growth.
