Most of the saithe caught whit purse seine is 1.2 kilo or less after processing. When caught alive this fish are in such condition that they are suited for live storage and on growing in cages. This strategy is required to be able to provide the marked whit filet products that they are looking for. Therefore, in this project, we wanted to investigate different strategies to feed the fish from “to small” to “big enough”. We found that start feeding of wild caught saithe was difficult independent of feeding the fish whit dry or moist feed. The effect of low or no feed intake during a period of 11 weeks was confirmed by a decrease in both liver index and condition factor of processed fish. To make a strategy which includes live storage, feeding and on growing of saithe profitable the success of start feeding will be the most important. In addition our calculations show that the most profitable strategy includes feeding for maintenance of quality and biomass of a fish that is big enough when caught.
