In this report we discuss the main development in the Brazilian bacalhau market the last years. The main findings are that the market is growing; however it is more value added products than the traditional Norwegian bacalhau that is growing. Because of this market development the Norwegian industry lose market shares. The main challenge for the Norwegian industry is that these products have higher labor costs than the Norwegian bacalhau, which implies that countries with lower labor cost have a competitive advantage.
The Norwegian export of bacalhau to Brazil has been quite stable the last years, however the export of bacalhau cod is increasing and the export of bacalhau saithe is decreasing. Less price difference between these two spices are the main reasons for this development. The Brazilian consumers have preference for Bacalhau cod, but high price have made many consumers to choose the cheaper “Tipo Bacalhau Saithe”.
