The aim of this study is to create relevant knowledge about sustainable use of renewable fisheries resources.
The release of "green house" gases from energy use are an important environmental factor. This study highlights the range of fuel usages between different fisheries, vessel sizes, catch methods and seasons. More information about these factors will allow the fisheries industry and regulatory bodies to better plan strategies and goals related to energy use. For instance it may be that not only could a fishery target optimal catch but also optimal energy use.
This study contributes to the required knowledge by showing how fuel usage is distributed over the year and how seasonality affects fuel usage in the Norwegian fisheries. The results show that the type of fishing gear used has the largest effect upon fuel usage.
