Byproducts from Norwegian spring spawning herring have been investigated with respect to bioactivities, i.e. peptides, lipids, enzymes and functional proteins, of commercial potential. The undifferentiated herring byproduct material have been used for biodiscovery of more than 20 industrially important enzymes covering three EC classes, and bioactive peptides with drug-like properties against deceases of fundamental impact against our society. Furthermore, oil made from ultra-fresh byproducts has been produced in semi-industrial scale with excellent peroxide and anisidine values. The herring by-products are also utilizable as a protein source for human consumption.
