Salmon lice on farmed Atlantic salmon and development of lice resistant to chemotherapeutants are an increasing problem leading to interest for alternative means.
Lice count data from controlled challenge tests show large genetic variation in resistance to salmon lice in salmon and no unfavorable genetic correlations to other traits.
Selection for increased resistance will over time reduce the need for delousing. How fast depending on the weight given to this trait in the breeding objective.
Predictions show that selection for only increased resistance will reduce lice count per fish with 24 % per generation or 75 % over five generations.
