In this project we have shown that it is possible to automatically sort whole pelagic fish (herring and mackerel) according to inner qualities such as fat content, sex (roe or milt in the belly of herring), or blood spots in the muscle. This sorting can be done at high speed based on on-line NIR spectroscopy.
Dedicated optical systems or modification of present commercial systems can be used for this purpose. The pelagic industry should carefully consider the possible added value by going from pure batch production to a production that is optimized according to the quality of each individual fish.
