Co-existence of marine industries in the coastal zone

Industrial economics    Production biology    Seafood industry

During this project, the researchers shall gather new, multidisciplinary knowledge about how the marine industries can coexist in a good way along the coast, and develop new methodologies and models for such coexistence.

There is a great need for more knowledge about the coexistence of marine industries in the coastal zone. Such knowledge would be crucial for everyone involved from both the private and public sector, where the objective would be to reduce conflict and facilitate dialogue between the various stakeholders.

Some research into this issue has been carried out in the past in Norway, but not in the form of larger initiatives involving both environmental, economical, social and institutional sustainability. There is a great need for competence-building and further developing of methodologies and models for coexistence of marine industries in the  coastal zone. Such models would enable us to leverage expertise on economy, biology and management.

Main objective

Strengthen the expertise on coexistence of marine industries in the coastal zone, and develop models and methods for coexistence.

Subsidiary objectives

  • Strengthen Nofima’s expertise on coexistence in marine industries in the coastal zone
  • Further develop and improve methods for analysing “ripple effects” on a local level
  • Develop new biological methods in order to, on an object level, quantify and document the impact of the interaction between wild fish and farmed fish
  • Create a common consensus on quality issues that might be associated with the wild fish caught in the vicinity of fish farmsUsing live storage of fish to improve quality
  • Create models and methods for successful coexistence of the various marine industries in the coastal zone
