Nofima as a partner in EU projects

Nofima is a leading, independent food research institute with over 360 employees.
Our three main areas of focus are aquaculture, the food industry and fisheries, but we also have vast experience when it comes to interdisciplinary projects.
Our research includes the entire food chain, from the start of food production, through harvesting, processing and packaging, to commercialisation and marketing.
We are experts in research on safe, healthy and tasty food, and focus on the development of production methods that are able to utilise every bit of raw material. This is how we want to develop sustainable food systems in accordance with the European Green Deal.
One of our main goals is to increase the competitiveness of both Norwegian and international partners.

Vast EU experience
Nofima has gained more than 25 years of experience from management and participation in large and small EU projects within the field of food research.
We have a robust administration which supports and assists our scientists both before and during projects. For example, Nofima has its own employees dedicated to working on EU projects. These employees regularly update their European Union expertise in order to assist with application writing, contract negotiation, financing, reporting and other follow-up activities.
Therefore, the framework surrounding all the research-related work we can contribute to is solidly in place.
In addition, we have an experienced communication department that achieves good results in promoting our research on various publishing platforms.
Horizon 2020
In the EU’s previous framework programme for research, Horizon 2020, Nofima coordinated 5 projects and was a partner in 20 projects that had a total value of 13.1 million Euros.

The vast majority of the projects we have participated in are related to Societal Challenges (82.7 percent), where we have mainly conducted research on food safety and sustainable food production. The rest of our EU projects (17.3 percent) are Excellent Science projects, where we have developed infrastructure related to research and development, and participated in the Marie Sklodowska-Curie-ITN network. Here, we have both developed talents and been a coordinator in advanced research.
Looking at all of our EU projects so far, we have collaborated with 389 different organisations, and with companies in 51 different countries. In addition to a number of different EU countries, we have collaborated with 21 countries spread across all the continents of the world.
In addition to our many and good national and international networks, we are extremely proud of our highly skilled and international staff. In 2021, we have 36 different nationalities employed at Nofima, and our working languages are both Norwegian and English.
We have been part of European research collaboration since the EU’s fifth framework programme for research and innovation, and we look forward to taking part in Horizon Europe, the EU’s ninth framework programme that will run in the period 2021-2027.
Close collaboration
Nofima works closely with Norwegian and foreign industry in many projects, and within many fields related to food. This network means that we often have companies we can contact that may be relevant when researching various issues.
In addition to a lot of different internal professional expertise, Nofima also has many good research partners we can refer to. Last but not least, we possess good knowledge about Norwegian policy instruments within the field of research.
