Biography Lars Thoresen
I enjoy variety in my workday as research scientist in the Department of Nutrition and Feed Technology at Nofima, but processing and fractionation of biomass is a recurring theme. During my time at Nofima, I have, among other things, developed methodology for refining mackerel oil, produced feed ingredient from polychaetes, worked with the removal of odor and taste components in protein hydrolysates, and investigated various antioxidants to stabilize microalgae powder. In our facilities in Bergen, we have access to state-of-the-art process technology — both in lab and pilot scale — including glass and steel reactors, separator and decanter centrifuges, evaporators, membrane filtration (micro / ultra and nano), and spray dryers (I have found that most things can be spray dried). Feel free to contact me if you want to develop new ingredients or biomasses for feed or food or want to discuss other project ideas.I received my PhD in organic chemistry from Texas A&M University in 2002 and spent 2003 as a postdoc at the University of Oxford. I worked as a medicinal chemist in San Diego, California for ca 9 years. There I synthesized a molecule that was later approved as a drug for ovarian cancer. I have also worked as head brewer for a small craft brewery.
