Do Pacific salmon species carry a secret they could share with Atlantic salmon? What is it in the genes that make these relatives of Atlantic salmon less susceptible to lice? Researchers will now find the answers to these questions, using the gene editing method CRISPR-Cas9.

Identify and validate candidate genes for CMS resistance in Atlantic salmon through state-of-the-art gene editing.

AquaIMPACT is a EU-funded research project that integrates breeding and nutrition to increase the competitiveness of the EU's aquaculture of Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, gilthead sebream and European seabass, to ensure food and nutritional security and to satisfy consumers' demands for high quality seafood with limited environmental impact.

The primary objective of FutureFish is to improve the robustness of salmon and lumpfish under a changing climate scenario through investigating the genetics of robustness in salmon to thermal stress and sea-lice and improving the sea-lice eating ability of lumpfish.
